90 Days Against the Frost: How a Terrified Stray Dog and Her Newborns Won the Ultimate Battle for Survival

Winter is often romanticized with images of soft snowfall and cozy firesides. However, for those without a roof over their heads, it is a relentless season of survival. In the frozen heart of December, amidst the concrete ruins of an abandoned, unfinished building, a silent tragedy was unfolding. A stray mother dog, completely alone, gave birth to three vulnerable puppies on the cold, debris-strewn floor. Shivering, starving, but fiercely protective, she refused to leave her babies for even a second.

This is the incredible 90-day chronicle of a rescue mission that began with a terrified, aggressive mother dog and ended with a heartwarming miracle of love, patience, and transformation.

The Discovery: A Shivering Family in the Winter Ruins

The story began when a local resident noticed movement inside an empty, incomplete house within a residential complex. Piercing winter winds howled through unglazed window frames, scattering dust and household garbage across the raw concrete floors. Tucked away in the deepest, darkest corner of the room lay a stray dog. She was shaking uncontrollably from the freezing temperatures, yet her body was curved tightly around three tiny, blind, newborn puppies.

A post was quickly shared within the neighborhood social media group, but no owner came forward. Realizing this was a homeless dog with no one else to rely on, a compassionate rescuer stepped in. With temperatures dropping drastically overnight, it was clear that without immediate human intervention, the fragile newborns would not survive the week.

On the very first visit, the rescuer brought warm goat’s milk kept in a thermos and high-nutrition dog food. The maternal instinct of the stray mother was powerful; she bared her teeth and growled, warning the stranger not to come too close. Understanding her fear, the rescuer placed the food nearby and stepped back. Driven by extreme hunger, the mother dog eagerly devoured the food and drank the milk, stepping away from her puppies for only a brief moment to replenish her energy before rushing back to nurse them.

Building the Foundation of Trust (Days 2 to 10)

Building trust with a traumatized animal is a slow, delicate process. For the first few days, the mother dog remained highly vigilant. Whenever the rescuer attempted to approach the open window to block the freezing drafts, the mother would block the path, terrified that her babies might be harmed.

By the third day, a small breakthrough occurred. The rescuer began bringing freeze-dried treats, tossing them gently from a distance. The mother dog accepted them, her body language shifting slightly from defensive aggression to cautious curiosity.

Recognizing that raw concrete offered no insulation from the ground chill, the rescuer waited for an opportunity on Day 8. When the mother dog briefly stepped downstairs to relieve herself, the rescue team moved swiftly. They constructed a simple, secure shelter using a heavy cardboard box and lined it with thick, warm blankets. The puppies were gently placed inside. When the mother returned, she was initially startled, but she quickly realized the box provided much-needed warmth. She stepped inside, settled down, and resumed nursing her puppies in a much more comfortable environment.

The Turning Point: Danger in the Middle of the Night

As the days pressed on, the puppies grew more active, which brought new, unexpected dangers. On the eleventh night, a terrifying incident occurred. One of the adventurous puppies managed to crawl out of the cardboard box, tumbling onto the cold floor. Unable to climb back in, the tiny pup spent hours crying out in the freezing darkness.

When the rescuer arrived the next morning, the puppy was shivering violently, exhausted from crying. Surprisingly, the mother dog was standing over the pup, visibly anxious but completely unsure of how to pick it up and return it to the nest. Her stress levels were incredibly high, and she refused to let anyone near her stranded baby.

The rescuer had to act fast. Working with a family member, they devised a plan. One person used a large, savory marrow bone to draw the mother’s attention to the far side of the room. While the mother was distracted by the food, the rescuer quickly scooped up the freezing puppy and placed it back into the warm nest.

With a severe cold front forecasted to hit the region, the team knew the cardboard box would no longer suffice. While the mother dog was out on Day 12, they upgraded the shelter to a heavy-duty, top-opening foam cooler block, which offered superior thermal insulation. However, this major change backfired temporarily. When the mother dog returned to find her home altered, her protective instincts flared up. For the next three days, she barked relentlessly at the rescuers, resetting much of the progress they had made.

But consistency overcomes fear. By Day 23, after receiving daily nutritious meals of chicken soup, egg yolks, and pork sausages, the mother dog’s heart melted completely. For the first time, she walked out of the building to greet her caretaker with a relaxed posture. It was on this day that she was officially given a name: Xiaobai (Little White).

An Unexpected Eviction and Moving Indoors

Just as Xiaobai and her puppies were settling into their routine, an unexpected hurdle arose on Day 24. The actual owner of the abandoned property returned with plans to renovate the building. Finding the dogs, the owner moved them down to a dark parking garage underneath the complex.

The cold concrete garage was no place for a recovering canine family. Fortunately, a kind-hearted neighbor witnessed the relocation and temporarily moved Xiaobai’s family into her apartment building’s warm hallway. She provided them with a cozy cat bed and heavy blankets.

By Day 30, the puppies had officially hit their one-month milestone. To celebrate their “full moon,” the rescuer prepared a massive feast of meat and fresh goat’s milk. The puppies were now growing teeth and trying to chew on solid kibble. Interestingly, as the puppies became more independent, Xiaobai began distancing herself, spending more time outdoors and leaving the pups alone in the nest during the night. The puppies would cry out, causing noise complaints from some of the building residents.

Knowing that the situation in the hallway was unsustainable, the rescuer made a definitive choice on Day 32: she brought all three puppies directly into her own home.

The move revealed a hidden health issue. During a routine veterinary checkup, the doctor discovered that all three puppies were suffering from a contagious skin condition, which had been passed down from Xiaobai. The rescuer immediately began a strict regimen of medicated baths and topical ointments. Within ten days, thanks to meticulous care, the puppies’ skin was completely healed, and their fur grew back soft and healthy.

The Long Road to Healing Xiaobai

While the puppies were safe indoors, Xiaobai remained a community dog, roaming the neighborhood. However, she had memorized the exact location of the rescuer’s apartment. Every single day, she would walk up to the front door, waiting patiently for her morning and evening meals.

Though she missed her puppies, Xiaobai was still too fearful to step inside a human household. The rescuer set up a dedicated, warm shelter right outside the front door, complete with fresh bowls of chicken broth mixed with rice.

On Day 38, the rescuer decided to bring the puppies out for a brief reunion. Xiaobai’s tail wagged furiously upon seeing her babies, but because her own skin condition was still severe and untreated, the rescuer had to keep them at a safe distance to prevent re-infection. The team tried to apply medication to Xiaobai, but her old fears returned, and she bolted down the stairs.

It took nearly another month of daily, positive reinforcement. Day 64 marked a historic milestone in the rescue journey: Xiaobai finally stood still and allowed the rescuer to gently pet her head and back. With this newfound physical touch, the rescuer was finally able to administer the proper dermatological treatments directly to Xiaobai’s skin. Within a week, the constant scratching stopped, and her raw patches began to heal.

A Perfect Ending: Mending Hearts and Finding Homes

As the 90-day mark approached, the transformation of this stray family was nothing short of miraculous.

Through a network of local animal lovers, the rescuer successfully found loving, permanent homes for two of Xiaobai’s puppies. The families were carefully vetted to ensure the pups would never experience the cold horrors of homelessness again. The third puppy, a beautiful and energetic female, was officially adopted by the rescuer, who named her Xiaomei (Little Beauty). Xiaomei quickly bonded with the resident dog of the house, filling the home with joy and playful energy.

Finally, on Day 90, seeing that Xiaobai was completely cured of her skin condition and fully comfortable with human touch, the rescuer opened her front door wide. This time, Xiaobai didn’t hesitate. She walked inside, leaving the harsh life of the streets behind forever.

Today, Xiaobai lives a life of absolute luxury. Under a careful, loving diet, her once-emaciated frame has become wonderfully plump and round. Her face, which once held only expressions of terror and fierce defensiveness, is now filled with relaxed smiles and bright, happy eyes. She spends her days playing in the winter snow, going on harmonious daily walks with her daughter Xiaomei, and sleeping on a plush, warm bed.

The story of Xiaobai and her puppies serves as a powerful reminder that patience, consistency, and love can heal even the deepest wounds of neglect. No matter how frozen and ruined a life may seem, a dedicated heart can always bring about a beautiful spring.
